ModBody Fitness

ModBody Fitness began as a simple idea: create a movement space where people could feel safe, supported, and deeply seen. Over time, that idea grew into a thriving community, a beloved physical studio in Seattle, a hub for local activism and generosity — and eventually into the foundation for what is now Stacey Sorgen Coaching.

Below is the story of how it all came to be.

2010 — The First Chapter

ModBody Fitness began in Seattle when founder Stacey Sorgen started working as an independent trainer in other people’s gyms. Even in those earliest years, her work centered on what would become ModBody’s signature values: inclusivity, weight-neutrality, trauma-informed care, and community connection.

A small but dedicated client base quickly grew around the safety and authenticity she provided.

2015 — A Home of Its Own

In 2015, ModBody Fitness opened its first brick-and-mortar studio at 9024 20th Ave NE, Suite 9030 in Seattle.

This space was intentionally designed as a safer environment for people who often felt out of place in traditional fitness settings — including LGBTQIA+ individuals, neurodivergent adults, people navigating chronic illness, and anyone seeking a supportive, judgment-free movement community.

What happened inside those walls went far beyond training. The studio became a true community hub, hosting:

  • Clothing swaps
  • Buy Nothing Project events
  • Game nights & craft nights
  • A Girl Scout Troop, meeting every Thursday for nearly five years
  • Fundraisers and community events supporting Girls on the Run of Puget Sound, SoleMates, The American Heart Association, and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

ModBody was known not just for fitness — but for belonging, kindness, and grassroots connection.

2018 — Growth & Rebranding

By 2018, ModBody’s services had expanded far beyond group workouts. Stacey was offering:

  • Personal training
  • Small group training
  • Integrative wellness coaching
  • Corporate wellness programs
  • Business coaching for entrepreneurs in and out of the fitness industry

At the same time, several organizations began using or copying the ModBody name, including businesses and even a podcast in Canada. To protect the work she had built — and to ensure the brand reflected the breadth of her services — ModBody Fitness began transitioning under a new umbrella: Stacey Sorgen Coaching

This rebrand allowed the heart of ModBody to continue, while tying the work directly to the person and reputation behind it.

2020 — A Pandemic Pivot with Heart

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced gyms to close, the large ModBody studio shut its doors. But the community spirit remained.

A smaller boutique space at 10015 Lake City Way NE, Suite 301 was temporarily secured as a hopeful bridge, but the greater transformation was already underway.

During the pandemic, ModBody:

  • Shifted entirely online
  • Launched free Support Calls for anyone needing kindness and connection
  • Offered free Recess for Kids to help overwhelmed parents and give children joy and movement
  • Developed two virtual programs — Strength Camp and Awake with Stace — which eventually merged into a single highly sought-after online community program

This pivot didn’t just preserve the business; it expanded accessibility nationwide and helped keep people connected during an isolating, uncertain time.

Late 2022 — A Relocation & New Beginning

At the end of 2022, Stacey and her wife relocated to Olympia, Washington to support their well-being and dramatically reduce a 3+ hour daily commute. With the online model now thriving, the Seattle studio was officially closed on New Year’s Eve 2022.

January 1st, 2023 marked a fresh chapter — one rooted in flexibility, accessibility, and continued virtual connection.

2023 — A Year That Changed Everything

In early 2023, the ModBody/SSC community watched its founder navigate profound personal loss. Stacey’s father passed away unexpectedly from a massive heart attack on January 18, 2023, and her mother — who faced complex medical needs and grief of her own — passed away later that same year.

Because the business had shifted online in 2020, Stacey was able to travel between Washington and Idaho nearly 20 times to care for her parents, manage their affairs, and honor their wishes.

Her work continued when it could, paused when necessary, and adapted to the demands of caregiving and grief. This flexibility — born from the ModBody pivot — became a lifeline during an unimaginably difficult time.

2024–2025 — What ModBody Has Become

Today, ModBody Fitness lives on as the origin story of Stacey Sorgen Coaching. Its values still shape every program:

  • Inclusivity
  • Weight-neutral, non-diet culture movement
  • Trauma-informed support
  • LGBTQIA+ & neurodivergent affirming care
  • Chronic illness and perimenopause-informed training
  • Community connection as a core part of wellness

Strength Camp, now a signature offering, combines everything ModBody stood for — support, humor, accessibility, and human connection — reimagined for a modern, virtual world.
